Battle of Sheriffmuir

At the height of the Jacobite Rebellion, the Battle of Sheriffmuir on November 13, 1715 was tactically a draw, but a psychological win for the British Government led by John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyll. The Jacobites were led by John Erskine, 6th Earl of Mar.

One of the Robert Burns most famous songs, “The Battle of Sherramuir” was written to be sung to the “Cameronian Rant” during a tour of the Highlands in 1787. It was first published in The Scots Musical Museum, appearing in volume III, 1790.
