Battle of Bannockburn
Traditional (although not definitive) evidence of Maclean participation
June 24th 1314
Although a decisive and complete Scottish victory, England refused to recognize Scotland’s independence for another 10 years.
Scots lead by Robert the Bruce
English lead by Edward II
Edward II fled the field with his personal bodyguard to Dunbar Castle leaving his army in disarray and without order, from there took a ship to England
With order broken, the battle turned into a route and the Scots pursued the retreating English to their border. Only one sizeable group of men—all footsoldiers—escaped to England.
Edward II never again engaged the Scots nor set foot in Scotland.
Fighting didn’t resume until after Edward III ascended to the throne of England.
